“Pain or not, Joe Frazier of Beaufort, South Carolina, was going for gold.”

The year was 1964. The city, Tokyo. That was the time and place that Joe Frazier first brought the smoke and entered the conversation. As a late replacement for Buster Mathis for America in the Games, nobody could stop Frazier. No man, no circumstances, no ailments. Even a broken thumb he suffered in the semifinals could not keep him from realizing his dream. He went to Japan to win gold.

And he did.

Thus began the unforgettable career of Joe Frazier.
