Hail To Pitt
The story of Pitt football isn’t tied to one moment. It’s built over time, through teams, traditions, and a connection that continues to carry forward. This collection draws from that foundation. Introducing the latest chapter in our Campus Legends program.

Before a game against Georgia Tech in 1918, the University of Pittsburgh’s legendary coach Pop Warner stood before the players with a direct message. “Okay boys,” he said. “There’s the speech. Now go out there and knock them off.”

They did just that, beating Georgia Tech 32-0 en-route to a third national championship.

Traditions are born from winning, and the Pitt Panthers football program had the blueprint early. The first undefeated seasons occurred in 1904, when the blue and gold’s defense gave up a single touchdown all year. The pride of the Panthers has been passed down ever since, a time-honored connection, from the days when Pop Warner roamed the sidelines to the 1930s when Jock Sutherland built Pitt into a national powerhouse, from the dominant 1976 national championship team to the present day, where the lineage of greatness is represented each time they hit the line of scrimmage.

Nine national titles. Two Big East championships. One ACC title. And 136 years of tradition. Football runs deep at Pitt, one of college football’s most storied programs. And when the Victory Lights go up at the Cathedral of Learning, it shines on everyone who ever donned the colors.

Hail to Pitt!
