This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of their birth. At the heart of American culture, they are still playing the classics. Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The Prince of Darkness and “Trane.” Jazz deities who inspired full artistic movements, bold songcraft, the very direction of music, and the generations that followed.
Davis on the trumpet, “Trane” on the tenor and soprano saxophone. One pushing music in directions nobody thought to go, the other the spirit of music itself. Davis, who hailed from East St. Louis, he poured his soul into jazz. Coltrane, who came up in Philly, wasn’t merely a god-like jazzman – he was an everlasting movement.
They were both born in 1926. They first played together in 1955, at Club Las Vegas in Baltimore. And they live on together as legends. Celebrating Miles and “Trane” at 100!
