“Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.”
One last year in New York.
It was 1934, and baseball was at a fever pitch in the Bronx, in large part because the Yankees had won four World Series titles in the last decade. It was the last year that Babe Ruth, the singular force who resurrected baseball as it emerged from the “dead ball” era, would wear the famous pinstripes. It would be the end of an era. On July 13 of that year, Ruth hit his 700th career home run, the first to ever reach that impossible number.
