It was in September of 1974. The biggest boxing match ever put together was set to take place in Zaire, between champion George Foreman and the brash challenger Muhammad Ali — a fight legendarily known as the “Rumble in the Jungle.” To kick off the festivities organizers planned at three-day music festival in Kinshasa, featuring such luminaries as B.B. King, The Spinners, “Mama Afrika” Miriam Makeba, Bill Withers, Manu Dibango and — to bring the house down at the end — the man himself, James Brown.
