A legacy carried by a city.

“If I die, I want to be born again and I want to be a footballer. And I want to be Diego Armando Maradona again. I am a player who has given people joy, and that is enough for me.”

SSC Napoli was on the brink of relegation when the godsend arrived. It was Maradona, the most celebrated soccer player in the world. A giant of the pitch who appeared on the scene a global icon from Argentina, a man who galvanized the city of Naples by giving it an identity and a profound sense of self-worth. In 1987, Napoli won their first-ever Serie A title, as well as a Coppa Italia. By 1989, the UEFA Cup, and a year later, the Supercoppa Italiana.

Yet what he did off the pitch made him a hero. Such as in 1985, when Maradona defied club orders to participate in a village fundraising match to help a local sick child in need of a medical procedure with prohibitive costs. He showed up on a potato field in a poverty-stricken area of Naples to show the people exactly who he was.

Nothing gave him more pleasure than passing greatness down. And as part of ROF’s “Greatness Passed Down” theme for the month of March, we have the full Maradona x Napoli capsule.
