It wasn’t just that he was the first player to break the color barrier in 1947, or that he became a symbol of equality for America’s pastime. It was that he held his head high for all to see, past, present, and future. He respected the game, and those who played it, while suffering the racist attitudes of his day with dignity. Above all, Jackie knew that his presence on the ballfield was the ultimate statement against all ignorance and prejudice, and he wore the uniform well.
