Irish Micky Ward was an absolute nightmare to fight. He never knew when he was beaten, and that made him a dangerous dance partner every second of every round. Even with his back against the wall, the fight was never over. Ward had a concealed weapon. That left hook to the body - a devastating power shot made famous by the likes of Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson.
The power of this shot was perfectly exemplified in Ward's 1997 matchup with the then-undefeated Alfonso Sanchez. Ward himself said this was probably one of the worst performances of his career. He was fighting uncharacteristically and was clearly down on all the scorecards through the first 6 rounds. Despite calls from the commentators to stop the fight and the referee threatening to do so if Ward didn't show him something - Irish Micky seemingly summoned the entirety of his will, determination, and skill and channeled it through one devastating swipe of his left hand. Down went Sanchez.
After the fight, Larry Merchant called it one of the most extraordinary things he'd ever seen in boxing. This win made it a 9-0 run for Ward since returning to the ring and displayed his legendary never say die attitude on the World stage.
