“George Dixon’s a guy that laid the bricks that so many champions walk on today. He did it with innovations, such as shadow boxing and the heavy bag. He’s someone who very few people know about but deserves homage. Because he fought so long ago, going back to the 1890s, people don’t know about him — but they should. He was a pioneer.
He was the first to accomplish so many things — notably, the first Black athlete to win a world championship. He seemed to have a great career that ended tragically. Unfortunately, he’s another one of those champions that we can learn from. We have to take the good, and learn from the bad, but he deserves major respect. He was an iron man. To fight that many rounds…for that length of time…it harrowing, but it seemed perfectly normal to him.
Guys like Dixon are icons we didn’t know we had. You want to keep his name alive. I hope that by highlighting him, we will inspire people to go do their research and pay homage.
George’s not well known to this generation, but he did a lot of work to not only move the sport forward but to move training forward as well.” -Andre Ward
Guest creative director Andre Ward joined forces with us at ROF to bring his vision to life, celebrating Black Boxing Royalty — those who came before him and paved the way to his own success. His story happened because great fighters like George Dixon told theirs so well.
