“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

Muhammad Ali brought an unorthodox fighting style, unprecedented speed, and extraordinary grace to his sport, while his charm and wit forever changed the public’s expectations of a champion. But while his success as a boxer is widely respected, Ali’s greatest triumphs have taken place outside the ring–as a leader and champion of civil rights.

Ali’s had an incredible influence on the black organizers who formed the backbone of the Civil Rights Movement and his power as a heroic symbol bridged the entire span of the movement’s ideological spectrum. In ways that nobody else could, Ali appealed simultaneously to people and organizations who otherwise agreed on little politically. In the words of one organizer, Bob Moses, “Muhammad Ali galvanized the Civil Rights Movement.”

Almost every major civil rights organization and leader at one time or another praised Ali and defended his decision to resist the Vietnam War. Malcolm X was the first to realize that Ali’s magnitude registered far beyond his home country. In his famous autobiography, Malcolm declared that Ali “captured the imagination and support of the entire dark world.” Even Martin Luther King Jr sent him a telegram saying: “I look forward to talking with you sometime in the future.” Tennis star and fellow civil rights activist, Arthur Ashe, publicly remembered that Ali was “admired by a lot of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, who were sometimes even a little bit jealous of the following he had.” Ali’s place in the civil rights era is rightfully among the vanguard.
