He was a national hero in Cuba after becoming the boxing-crazed island nation’s first world champion. Kid Chocolate (real name Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo) fought over 150 times in the 1930s and ’40s, most memorably the 1931 night in Philadelphia when he KO’d Benny Bass to win the junior lightweight belt.
